Tuesday night Sagra at Berta

Ah, Tuesday night – a few friends, a cosy table, an italian love of food, and a festival focusing on this week’s chosen ingredient. It is the wonderful weekly sagra at Berta, and tonight it is all about charcuterie.

We start with a lovely glass of Bacio il cielo 2014 de Concius, and dig into the salumi – hot, fennel and milano, with some toast and pickles to pull it together. Coming close on the heels are a form of chicken croquettes, and a fresh salad of pear and mozzarella.

Winter Warmers

A trebbiano spoletino 2014 Pertinacia introduces a Fusilli salsiccia basil ricotta, both real winter warmers. The broken down sausage with the al dente fusilli, some basil and ricotta mixed through is simple and delicious.

It is followed by a glorious piece of fish, wild kingfish with bottarga, carrot and fennel, matched with a glass of Vilot 2012 CA Viola. A true example of taking the best produce and doing only the bare minimum to it.

Bacon for dessert

Charcuterie and dessert – yes please! The mix of chocolate ice-cream, crumbs, hazelnut  and all are beautifully topped by the pancetta stesa pepata, the black pepper dusted cured & aged pork belly. Bellissimo! And a glass of Notissimo 2013 Rio Favara is a ‘sweet but not too sweet’ accompaniment.
